Dehghan in his letter remarked Shoygu’s last month visit to Tehran as a milestone in mutual cooperation between Iran and Russia, in particular in military and technical fields, the Islamic Republic’s ISNA news agency reported Feb. 7.

Shoygu visited Tehran on Jan. 20 and held talks with senior Iranian officials on ways to promote defense ties between Russia and the Islamic Republic.

The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on military cooperation during the visit which emphasizes fighting terrorism, extremism and separatism as well as boosting mutual cooperation for peace and security in the region.

The MoU also includes holding joint military drills, cooperation in military training as well as fighting against piracy in international waters and the Caspian Sea, according to the official website of the Islamic Republic’s defense ministry.

In his letter to Shoygu Iran’s defense minister referred to the accord as a step forward in Tehran-Moscow relations.

Dehghan also said that has accepted his Russian counterpart’s invitation to attend the Moscow international security conference.

The Russian defense minister earlier invited Dehghan to make a trip to Russia to attend the 4th Moscow conference on international security in April 2015.
