Euronews presents Nizami Ganjavi as a Persian poet born in Azerbaijan
The latest program of "Azerbaijani Life" at the Euronews TV channel has presented a material about great Azerbaijani poet of the XII century Nizami Ganjavi.
However, it is regrettable that the Euronews material presented the Azerbaijani poet as a Persian poet, born in Azerbaijan.

Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Professor, member of the Milli Majlis Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, commenting on the error of the channel, said that already in Soviet times it was clearly proven that Nizami Ganjavi is the great Azerbaijani poet.

"Azerbaijani Soviet scholar Hamid Arasli and others repeatedly proved that Nizami Ganjavi is an Azerbaijani poet. This is evidenced by the fact that he was born and raised in Ganja. The subject of his works is also Azerbaijan," she said.

According to Bakhshaliyeva, this misunderstanding, which has for many years pursued Nizami Ganjavi, comes from the fact that he wrote in Persian.

"As the Arabic language was considered the language of science, Farsi was considered the language of poetry. Farsi, as we know, in the Middle Ages was the language of poetry in many regions, as far as India. So, many well-known poets of the period, even Indian, for example such as Amir Khusrow Dehlavi, wrote in Farsi. There are also a lot of Persian-speaking Afghan, Uzbek, Turkish poets, but that does not mean that they are all the Persian poets," she added.

Bakhshaliyeva also noted that if a poet or a writer belongs to one nation, one people, but wrote his works in another language, he is a representative of two cultures: "In this case, Nizami is the great Persian Azerbaijani poet. Therefore, the legacy of Nizami is first of all a contribution to the Azerbaijani poetry, but also to the Persian literature."

According to her, unfortunately, this is not the first time that Nizami Ganjavi is presented as a Persian poet, and in order to avoid such misunderstandings, we need to better promote his work, and must always consult Euronews to correct its mistake.

The next program of "Azerbaijan" life on the Euronews explains the astonishing richness of poetry of Nizami Ganjavi, which is woven in Azerbaijan with the sounds of nature and the beauty of the surrounding mountains.

The program also notes that Nizami is considered the biggest romantic poet in Persian epic literature. He combined the pre-Islamic and Islamic Iran, influenced such geniuses as Hafiz, Rumi and Saadi.
