Azerbaijan considers amending law on citizenship

Azerbaijan is considering amending the law “On citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan”, AzVision.az reported.

According to proposed item of the Article 14 of the law (Admission to the citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan), “Court shall determine the fact that a person who arrived in the Republic of Azerbaijan before January 1, 2006, and permanently residing in the country, who does not belong to any nationality and does not have valid identification documents is not a citizen of any country and permanently lives in the Republic of Azerbaijan. This provision shall not apply to persons who voluntarily renounced their citizenship”.

The bill also notes that the purpose of making this amendment to the law "On Citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan" is to create the possibility of obtaining Azerbaijani citizenship by persons who arrived in Azerbaijan before January 1, 2006 and permanently reside in the country and have a passport of the former USSR.

The bill will be tabled at the Parliament’s plenary session scheduled for February 1.
