Huge work has been done on modernization of justice, including penitentiary system and appropriate infrastructure, improving the legislation in this field. Within the reforms, the rights of prisoners and defendants were expanded. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has supported the implemented measures in the country.
According to the agreement signed between ICRC and Azerbaijani Government, the sides have been cooperating for a long period. A meeting between Elena Ajmone Sessera, head of the ICRC Azerbaijani Delegation and Fikrat Mammadov, Minister of Justice, Chairman of Judicial-Legal Council was dedicated to the extension of validity period of the mentioned agreement. Relevant protocol on extension of the Agreement was signed by Minister Fikrat Mammadov and Elena Ajmone Sessera.
Minister Fikrat Mammadov highlighted what had been done under President Ilham Aliyev to modernize the country`s justice system, strengthen the protection of rights of prisoners and defendants. He also lauded the ICRC’s supporting Azerbaijan’s reforms.
Noting the successful results of reciprocal activity of ICRC with Azerbaijan in justice area, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation to Azerbaijan Elena Ajmone Sessera hailed justice reforms in the country, expressed her satisfaction for productive and high-level cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, telling that she witnessed the reforms carried out in Azerbaijan, she appreciated the achievements obtained on fundamentally improving the detention conditions of prisoners and medical services and shared her good impressions, expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani Government for effective cooperation.
The event was attended by civil society representatives, heads of the law-enforcement bodies, who expressed confidence for further effective cooperation of the ICRC and Azerbaijani Government.
