Azerbaijan discussing issue of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev through diplomatic channels
“We are discussing the issue of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev, who were taken hostages by Armenians, through diplomatic channels,” Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said March 18 at a press conference following the meeting with his Sudanese counterpart Ali Ahmed Karti.

According to him, each time foreign diplomats visit Azerbaijan they are urged to bring up this matter when they go to Armenia.

“The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland and an EU representative mentioned this issue as well,” said Mammadyarov.

In July of last year, Russian citizen Dilgam Asgarov and Azerbaijani citizen Shahbaz Guliyev were taken hostage by the Armenians while on their way to Kalbajar to visit the homelands. Another Azerbaijani citizen Hasan Hasanov was shot dead. His body was taken from the enemy and buried in Baku.

The Armenian side then put the two hostages on illegal trial in the occupied region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The so-called court sentenced Dilgam Asgarov to lifetime imprisonment and Shahbaz Guliyev to 22 years in prison.
