Astronaut smuggled a sandwich into space 50 years ago
According to Space.com, when Grissom saw the sandwich in Young’s hands, he asked him from where he got it. Then Young told him that he brought the sandwich with him; and also said that he wants to taste it.
Wally Schirra was a backup crew member and also one of the first men in space in the Mercury missions, and he had bought the sandwich two days before the launch. Schirra gave the sandwich to Young on the morning when Gemini 3 was launched.
According to reports, the sandwich was difficult to eat and crumbs started floating around the cabin, when Young took a bite. “After the flight, our superiors at NASA let us know in no uncertain terms that non-man-rated corned beef sandwiches were out for future space missions”, Grissom said after the incident in an interview.
