Normalcy returns to liberated Afrin

Normalcy has returned to daily life in northwestern Syria’s Afrin region, which was liberated by Turkey-backed forces from YPG/PKK and Daesh terrorist groups.

After liberating Afrin’s town center -- formerly a major hideout for YPG/PKK terrorists -- on March 18, the Turkish army is taking security measures in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency reporters on the field, Turkish military is defusing handmade explosives across the city and filling trenches dug by the terrorists.

Residents are recovering from the trauma caused by violence they have witnessed. The number of stores opened in the town center have also increased.

Turkish aid agencies are carrying out humanitarian work in the region. The Turkish Red Crescent distributed hot meals to civilians at a mobile kitchen in the town center.

Turkish security forces also patrol the area every day to maintain order and protect the residents.

On Jan. 20, Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch to clear YPG/PKK-Daesh terrorists from Afrin.

The operation aims to establish security and stability along Turkey’s borders and the region as well as to protect Syrians from terrorist oppression and cruelty, according to the Turkish General Staff.

The operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on international law, UN Security Council resolutions, its self-defense rights under the UN charter, and respect for Syria's territorial integrity, it said.

The military also said only terror targets are being destroyed and that "utmost care" is being taken to avoid harming civilians.
