First Turkic Universiade opens in Baku

The First Turkic Council University Sports Games (Turkic Universiade) have kicked off in Baku. The Games are co-organized by the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States (Turkic Council) and Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Participants in the opening ceremony included Azerbaijani minister of youth and sport Azad Rahimov, Secretary General of the Turkic Council Ramil Hasanov, vice presidents of Azerbaijan`s National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade and Khazar Isayev, deputy Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee Azer Aliyev, president of the International Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation Gunay Afandiyeva, MPs, diplomats and representatives of the general public.

The aim of the Games is to bring together and socialize the young athletes of the countries sharing the same history and cultural heritage through the unifying power of sports, as well as to strengthen ties of friendship and fraternity among the youngsters and brotherly societies.

Approximately 400 university athletes and coaches from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey will be attending the event. The closing ceremony of the Games, which will be organized in 7 different sports, will be held on April 9.

Turkic Council University Sports Games will be organized every two years with widespread participation from the Turkic world.
