Eldar Mahmaudov: Religious circles and intelligence agencies of some regional countries try to increase radicalism in Azerbaijan
“Necessary preventive measures are being taken on the eve of the First European Games in this regard”

Last year the Azerbaijani Ministry of National Security carried out consistent measures to combat terrorism, separatism, religious extremism and other crime cases aimed at destabilizing the sociopolitical situation in the country. 33 persons who took part in combat operations within illegal armed groups in the Syrian Arab Republic and 4 Azerbaijani members of the terrorist organization operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan were brought to justice.

Minister Eldar Mahmudov made the remarks at the event held on the occasion of the 96th anniversary of the establishment of Azerbaijani security agencies, the ministry’s public relations department told.

The minister said that seven members of two radical extremist groups equipped with various types of firearms and military equipment, which intended to commit crimes of terrorism, were detained.

Mahmudov also added that illegal actions committed by citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan, like fighting within radical extremist groups and illegal armed groups operating in foreign countries cause concern, thus the situation makes it important to struggle more efficiently against such negative phenomena such as religious extremism.

It was noted that religious circles and intelligence agencies of some regional countries try to increase radicalism in Azerbaijan.

“Necessary preventive measures are being taken on the eve of the First European Games in this regard. Possible threats against the Republic of Azerbaijan are kept under constant attention,” the minister underlined.
