Azerbaijan to increase generating capacities in 2018

This year Azerbaijan will put into operation a number of power facilities that will allow to increase generating capacity, Head of Azerenerji OJSC (energy operator of Azerbaijan) Etibar Pirverdiyev said in an interview to the website of the country's ruling party.

Head of JSC said, the electric power system was strategic from the point of view of social and economic development of the country, and for this reason new goals connected with perspective development of this industry were regularly defined.

"Our plans to expand production in the future and improve the quality are quite big. Already this year, some innovations will appear in the country's energy system," Pirverdiyev said.

The head of the company noted that the reconstructed Mingachevir hydroelectric power station with a capacity of 424 megawatts, the reconstruction of which was carried out in 2010-2017, will be put into operation in 2018.

"The final work on the construction of the second power plant with a capacity of 409 MW at Shimal-2 station in Baku is underway. It is expected that the plant will be put into operation this year. Also in 2018, a power plant with a capacity of 16.5 megawatts will be put into operation in Lerik," Pirverdiyev said.

The head of the company reminded that in recent years Azerbaijan had also carried out large-scale construction of small hydropower plants.

"Several new hydropower plants are already successfully operating. This year it is planned to put into operation small hydroelectric power stations such as "Astara-1", "Oguz-1”, “Oguz-2" and "Oguz-3"," Pirverdiyev said.

Currently, the capacity of the electric power system of Azerbaijan is more than 6,000 megawatts.
