Opposition blocks highways linking Armenia with Georgia, Iran

Opposition supporters blocked highways linking Armenia with Georgia and Iran on Wednesday, AzVision.az reported citing TASS.

The protesters are calling to elect Armenian opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan as the country’s prime minister.

"Today all people demand one thing: our leader Nikol Pashinyan should become the prime minister. 55 members of the Republican Party should understand this truth," said one of the protest organizers who launched the blocking of a road to Georgia near Sevan.

A similar situation is on the road connecting Armenia with Iran. Local citizens blocked the road near Vayk with trucks and are chanting anti-government slogans.

Earlier in the day, Pashinyan did not rule out boycotting early parliamentary polls.

Since April 13, opposition’s widespread protests have gripped Armenia. On April 23, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan tendered his resignation in the wake of protests. First Deputy Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan was appointed as the acting prime minister.

On Tuesday, Armenia’s parliament rejected opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan’s bid to become prime minister. Pashinyan was backed by 45 lawmakers but failed to obtain 53 seats he needed to have a majority. After that he called on his supporters to launch large-scale civil disobedience actions.

The next vote in the parliament on a new prime minister is scheduled for May 8.
