Deputy PM: Karabakh conflict creating problems for ensuring employment in Azerbaijan

The Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is creating serious problems for ensuring employment in Azerbaijan, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister Ali Ahmadov said at an international conference “Towards Sustainable Development Goals: Promotion of Sustainable Development and Decent Work” in Baku.

Ahmadov noted that as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijanis were subjected to ethnic cleansing by Armenia.

“As a result, more than a million people have become refugees and internally displaced persons,” he said. “You know how big is the task to provide more than a million people with decent work.”

He noted that on the other hand, the fact that Azerbaijan’s territories occupied by Armenia aren’t used for agriculture purposes creates problems.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
