Head of State Migration Service meets with regional director of IOM

Head of the State Migration Service Vusal Huseynov held meeting with Argentina Szabados, the Regional Director of IOM Offices in Southeastern Europe, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Chief of IOM Mission in Azerbaijan, Mr. Serhan Aktoprak also attended the meeting.

The main aim of the meeting was to discuss the perspectives of cooperation with the IOM, which officially joined the UN family in 2016 and one of the main international partners of the State Migration Service, AzVision.az reports.

The chairman of the service said that IOM is one of the key partners of the State Migration Service in field of migration management and within the organization's activities dozens of projects were implemented in the country.

The main priority for the State Migration Service is the deepening of existing international cooperation, strengthening Azerbaijan’s position at the global level in the migration field, Huseynov said.

Commenting on the importance of the implemented projects, the chairman noted that 12 inquiries about 16 people have been sent to the International Organization for Migration within the framework of the pilot project on assistance to voluntary repatriation. Consequently, 12 people have been voluntarily repatriated to their countries of origin.

Expressing his gratitude for sincere reception, Argentina Szabados underlined that the organization exists for 22 years and has implemented projects together with International Organization of Migration since 2001. He also mentioned about his visit to Azerbaijan in 2016. Szabados stated that model of migration governance existing in Azerbaijan can be an example to other countries.

Issues of mutual interest have also been discussed during the meeting.
