200 hundred years ago, on June 1, 1818, the first post office was opened in Ganja, Azerbaijan.

The communication has deep roots in Azerbaijan. Heralds, messengers and camel caravans were the first forms of communication of Azerbaijan.

Shah Ismayil Khatai, the leader of Safavi state, laid the foundation for the post on the state level in 1501.

The first post office was opened in Yelizavetpol (present Ganja) in 1818 and later the post offices were established in Baku and Azerbaijan province.

The Baku Post-Telegraph office was established within the Tbilisi Post Office in 1901.

The Baku Post Office was shutdown in 1916 and separate post and telegraph offices were established instead.

Following the declaration of the independence adopted by the National Council of Azerbaijan on May 25, 1918 the Road, Post and Telegraph Ministries were established within the Temporary government.
