More about: Gabala
Located along the western shore of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan is home to about 10 million people, and more than 100,000 of them reside in Gabala, a region whose history dates back 2,400 years.
Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of Caucasian Albania, an ancient state unrelated to the modern-day Eastern European country of the same name that existed in what is present-day Azerbaijan as early as 4th century BC. The earliest records mentioning Gabala are from the first century AD, however, found in epigraphs associated with the Roman author Pliny the Elder, who called the city Cabalaca.
