Kazakhstan to ratify Convention on Legal Status of Caspian Sea in near future

Kazakhstan plans to ratify the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in the near future, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large Zulfiya Amanzholova said at a briefing on Friday, according to TASS.

"We intend to ratify the convention in the near future. The Foreign Ministry will launch the necessary procedures immediately. We will submit the convention to the government, the time frame and all the procedures are determined, so I don’t think there will be any delays," she said.

According to her, the Kazakh government will later pass the document to the parliament. Amanzholova also said that it had taken the Caspian states a long time to agree on the matter so there was no reason to "delay its ratification."

The presidents of the five Caspian states (Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan) signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, which had been agreed by the five states’ foreign ministers at their Moscow meeting in December 2017, at the Fifth Caspian summit held in Kazakhstan’s city of Aktau.
