ADR parliament had key role in statehood ideology development in Azerbaijan: Speaker

Establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and its parliament in 1918 was a manifestation of the statehood potential of the Azerbaijani people in new historical conditions and realization of the dream of independence, Speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament Ogtay Asadov said Sept. 21 at a solemn meeting dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijani parliament.

"Implementation of the parliamentary republic system, confident steps on the path to democratic and secular statehood opened a new page in the political life of not only Azerbaijan, but the entire Muslim East,” the speaker said.

Asadov noted that the progressive legislative acts adopted by the ADR parliament in the political, economic, social, cultural and military spheres created conditions for the effective activity of the state.

“For the first time in the East, the ADR enshrined equal suffrage for men and women,” he said. “Azerbaijani parliament carried out its activities on the basis of democratic principles. This legislative body represented all political forces and trends, representatives of various nationalities in Azerbaijan. The ADR played an important role in the development of the ideology of statehood and political culture in our country. The successful activity of that parliament testifies that the Azerbaijani people are able to create a national state based on democratic principles.”
