Format of negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia remains unchanged, says Hikmat Hajiyev

“Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan had a conversation on the sidelines of the CIS Summit in Dushanbe. This conversation proves that the format of the negotiation process remains unchanged and negotiations can only be held between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides”, said Hikmat Hajiyev, Deputy Head of the Foreign Relations Department of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration.

On September 26, Azerbaijani FM and Armenian FM held a meeting in the same format in New York within the UN General Assembly. Previously, they met in July 2018.

“The Azerbaijani side is always ready to hold constructive negotiations to solve the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. This indicates Azerbaijan’s commitment to the negotiation process in the current format”, Hajiyev noted.

“The main reason of the ceasefire violation is the illegal presence of Armenian Armed Forces in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories and continuation of the military occupation. In this regard, the Armenian side has always been the instigator for the ceasefire violation and the tension escalation”, Hajiyev stated.

“I would like to remind you some facts. In 2014, Armenian Armed Forces held large-scale military drills in occupied territories following the presidents’ meeting in Paris. In addition, the Armenian side attempted to attack positions of the Azerbaijani army near Agdam district in 2014. The Azerbaijani Armed Forces shot down that helicopter. Besides, on April 2, 2016, the Armenian Armed Forces opened fire at all the frontier positions and settlements of Azerbaijan. In this regard, in accordance with the UNSC resolutions, the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories will not only eliminate military risk factor but also create opportunities for the political settlement of the conflict. Moreover, it can restore the peace, stability and security in the region", Hajiyev added.
