Svante Cornell: Pope, EU deals with historical issues rather than their own job
“Pope Francis and the European Union deal with historical issues rather than their own job,” Svante Cornell, Director of the Stockholm-based Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, told APA in his remarks on the support shown by the pontiff and the European Parliament to the so-called Armenian genocide.

Conrell outlined that this kind of issue can only be dealt with by historians.

“This is a purely historical argument. So only historians – not parliamentarians or political leaders – can deal with it. I think it is wrong to comment on an issue on behalf of historians,” he said.

Note that, Pope Francis has called the so-called Armenian genocide “first genocide of the century’. A bit later, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the recognition of the so-called Armenian genocide.
