US supports Germany`s call for Morsi`s release
The United States supports Germany`s call for deposed Egyptian leader Mohammed Morsi to be released by the Egyptian interim government, a US official said Friday.
In Berlin, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called for an end to the "restrictive measures" imposed on Morsi after he was deposed last week.

Westerwelle called for an independent international organization such as the International Committee of the Red Cross to be given "immediate" access to Morsi, according to the German Foreign Ministry.

In Washington, asked if the United States supported Germany`s call, Jen Psaki, State Department spokeswoman, said: "We do agree."

Morsi, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, is being held by the military in an unknown location without charges. An interim president, Adli Mansour, has been named.

The deputy spokesman of the German Foreign Minister, Martin Schaefer, said Westerwelle warned against "every form of political persecution" in the aftermath of Morsi`s ouster.

"We agree with our international partners that every appearance of selective justice must be avoided," Schaefer said.

Asked if the US would recognize Morsi as president of Egypt if he is released, Psaki said: "It is of course up to the Egyptian people, as we`ve said a number of times, to determine their future and the path forward."

Psaki said the US was working with the interim government and that the US ambassador had already met with Mansour.
