Rescue effort continues in Nepal after Saturday’s devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake that has killed more than 3,200 people, according to the latest official reports.

As many as 48 aftershocks with a magnitude ranging from 3.5 to 6.9 have been registered following the earthquake. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already sent medical supplies to cover the needs of 40,000 people, Under-Secretary-General of Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, said.

An official spokesman for Nepal’s police, Kamal Singh Ban, told police have information that 6,239 people have been affected by the quake.

More than 200 people have gone missing following a massive avalanche on Mount Everest. A total of 22 climbers have been killed and another 62 have been wounded.

The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) said at least 6.6 million Nepal`s citizens were in the disaster area at the time of the earthquake.

Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, where more than 1,000 people died, has suffered the worst damage. The quake has ruined the historic center of the city, including the 62-meter-high tower that was built in 1832 and was listed by UNESCO as a site of global architectural heritage.
