According to Agencia Brasil`s Wednesday report, at least 45 injured protesters were taken to emergency care units or hospitals. Seven were arrested, according to the media outlet.
Teachers have been on strike since Monday, as the country`s Legislative Assembly approved changes to pensions in the early evening. Video clips distributed by local newspapers showed members of law enforcement shooting tear gas as protesters approached the assembly.
"Unfortunate, shocking and unwanted scenes… The attack did not come from police. They stood to protect the building of the Legislative Assembly," the governor of Parana state, Beto Richa, said as quoted by Agencia Brasil
As many as 33,000 retirees who have their pensions paid by the state will now be transferred to a different scheme where pensions will be paid by working teachers alongside the state.
