EU proposes to establish consortium for Turkmen gas import
The EU proposes to establish a consortium with the participation of major European energy companies, which can take some time.
This proposal was made by Maroš Šefčovič, deputy chairman of the European Commission on Energy Union of the EU as part of a quadripartite meeting on gas supplies to Europe held in Turkmenistan, Azerbaijani Minister of Energy Natig Aliyev told reporters on May 13.

"The Turkmen side expressed its interest in supplying its gas to Europe via the Trans-Caspian pipeline,” the minister said. “Turkmenistan is ready to supply 30 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe, however, there are a number of unsolved questions. It is unclear who will build the gas pipeline. The sources of funding, etc. are also unknown."

The energy ministers of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and the EU attended the meeting.

"The sides decided to establish a permanent working group,” the minister said. “We will inform each other about its representatives in the group soon. As for Azerbaijan’s side, it will include the representatives of the Ministry of Energy, SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan), the Foreign Ministry and perhaps the Ministry of Justice."
