Kazakhstan’s first president Nursultan Nazarbayev will retain the right to speak at the parliament and governmental meetings when discussing issues important for the country, AzVision.az reports citing Kazakh media.
This follows from the draft amendments to the country’s Constitutional Law dated July 20, 2000 "On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - Elbasy". The amendments were previously approved by the Parliament’s Mazhilis [lower house].
"[The first president has the right] to speak at the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan and its chambers, meetings of the government of the republic when discussing issues important for the country; to be a member of the Constitutional Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan," the draft text said.
According to the amendments, Nazarbayev will also be able to be a member of the Constitutional Council. At the same time, Nazarbayev was deprived of the status of lifelong chairman of the Security Council and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.
Now, the amendments will be discussed in the Senate [upper house of the parliament], and then submitted for signature to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
