Russia-Ukraine war & Chinese wisdom of conflict resolution - OPINION

By Dr Mehmood-ul-Hassan Khan

THE ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has entered into its 9th day during which lots of “fake”, “false” and fictional propaganda of the western media and the rotary of its leaders tried to distort the basic facts about the conflict.

Despite all their high talks about democracy, security concerns, and food and energy compulsions to change the hang-over of the history and perpetuated societal disharmony of the defunct state of Ukraine, truth is still very much alive and preserved and wide acceptability of Russia’s just stance vividly confirms it.

Throughout the ups and downs and integration of ancient Europe, national security remained a common and of course key factor in the evolution of human civilization and the development of the modern political system.

The wars among European countries (Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Poland, etc) clearly demonstrated that the respective serious security concerns of these countries pulled them towards deadly conflicts and confrontations in the past.

Thus Russia has already conveyed its serious concern about its national security because of heavy presence of NATO in the Black Sea, the next door.

Unfortunately, two rounds of diplomatic negotiations in Belarus could not yield any result because of irrational and mismatching expectations of the Ukrainian side.

Although Russia showed some necessary flexibility but Ukraine’s remote-controlled regime has failed to resolve the ongoing issue.

The ongoing war has been misled and misread by the US, EU and, of course, Ukraine itself because of false and fake promises and pledges of the West which has ruined the chances of durable peace and stability in the region.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has been swinging between so many false stories, street smart acts, strategic orientations, mirage and reality, and last but not least, gossip and the ghost of Kyiv.

Russia has a constant principled stance that due to certain geopolitical and geostrategic security threats; Ukraine should not be included in NATO and EU.

But as usual, the West, USA, and EU did not pay any attention and indulged in proxies and dirty power politics for encircling Russia from its backyard which has now become the yardstick of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

The US and EU have remained severer violators of global peace, international law and attacked on many countries around the globe to achieve their own vested interests.

According to the latest published reports and declassified data the US on the plea of national security and so called global peace has been notoriously indulged in various misadventures (85 percent) in the modern world.

Killing of millions of innocent people, children and weaker sections of the society in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and many countries of the African Continent by the US and the EU clearly demonstrate their chronic follies.

The US should not forget the famous “Cuban Missiles Crisis” which was deployed by the Russian authorities after the failed efforts namely the “Cuban Bay of Pig” by the US to depose the Cuban government and subsequently was taken as a real security threat to USA and its allies.

Ultimately Russian better negotiating skills prevailed and averted the imminent direct tussle between the USA and USSR the former name of Russia.

Thus now Russia striving hard to secure its essential security threats which should not be propagated as anti-peace and stability.

The Chinese government has taken a most rational stance highlighting the importance of de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy and urged the conflicting parties to give peace a chance but battery-operated regime of Ukraine and its trans-regional supporters could not ready for meaningful engagements.

China termed unilateral sanctions on Russia “misappropriate” which would not achieve any result.

China also showed solidarity with Russia and denounced any economic, political, financial, banking or military sanctions against it.

Most recently, the United Nations Security Council fiercely debated about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine in which more than 35 countries including Pakistan, China and even India abstained and did not participate in an anti-Russia resolution.

The State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi called to many world leaders, especially the EU and thoroughly discussed the ongoing war.

Wang Yi shared China’s basic position on the Ukraine issue which would be an ideal road map for sustainable conflict resolution of the ongoing war.

In addition to this China maintains that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected and protected and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter abided by in real earnest.

This position of China is consistent and clear-cut and applies equally to the Ukraine issue.

Moreover, China believes that the security of one country should not come at the expense of the security of other countries, still less should regional security be guaranteed by strengthening or even expanding military blocs.

It urged that the Cold War mentality should be discarded completely. It stressed that the legitimate security concerns of all countries should be respected.

In this regard, NATO’s five consecutive rounds of eastward expansion should be stopped and Russia’s legitimate security demands ought to be taken seriously and properly addressed.

Being a responsible member of the world community, China supports and encourages all diplomatic efforts conducive to a peaceful settlement of the Ukraine crisis.

Furthermore, China welcomes the earliest possible direct dialogue and negotiation between Russia and Ukraine.

The Ukraine issue has evolved in a complex historical context. Thus Ukraine should function as a bridge between the East and the West, not a frontier in big power confrontation.

China also supports the EU and Russia in entering into equal-footed dialogue on European security issues and implementing the philosophy of indivisible security, so as to form eventually a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism.

China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible major country, has always faithfully fulfilled its international obligations and played a constructive role in maintaining world peace and stability.

Thus China has the best record in terms of regional as well as global peace and stability efforts among major countries.

China has never invaded other countries or engaged in proxy wars, nor has it ever sought spheres of influence or participated in military bloc confrontations.

China stays committed to the path of peaceful development and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

It will continue to firmly oppose all hegemonies and power politics and resolutely uphold the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, especially small and medium-sized countries.

To conclude, USA and the EU should not make another “Berlin Wall” at the doorstep of Russia which would have devastating consequences for the region and beyond.

With the start of ongoing war regional & international stock exchanges, commodity/money markets, oil, gas, food items and energy prices have been skyrocketing.

Political sanity should prevail and rhetoric should be discarded.Global peace and pace of development may be achieved and sustained by implementing the holistic Global Development Initiative of Chinese President Xi which he showcased last year.
