Death toll from massive quakes in Türkiye surpasses 9,000 - UPDATED 

At least 9,057 people were killed and 52,979 others injured after two strong earthquakes jolted southern Türkiye on Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday, AzVision.az reports citing the Anadolu Agency.

While visiting Hatay province, which is one of the worst quake-hit areas, Erdogan pledged to take all necessary steps to prevent the suffering of all earthquake victims.

"As we speak, 21,200 personnel, including soldiers, gendarmerie, and police, are taking part in rescue efforts in Hatay," Erdogan added.

The Turkish president further noted that at least 60,000 accredited volunteers, including those from NGOs and foreign teams, are involved in earthquake search and rescue efforts.

Türkiye has mobilized all the resources for post-quake efforts, Erdogan said in an earlier visit to Kahramanmaras, adding: "The state is working with municipalities, especially with the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), with all its means."

More than 98,150 search and rescue personnel are currently conducting operations in the field, AFAD said in a statement.

A total of 70,818 family tents were set up to shelter survivors, AFAD also said.

It added that 5,514 vehicles, including excavators, tractors, and dozers, were also sent to the disaster area.

In a visit to the quake-hit region to inspect rescue and relief efforts, Erdogan said a total of 6,444 buildings were destroyed.

The death toll from the deadly earthquakes in Türkiye surpassed 7,000, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced Wednesday, AzVision.az reports citing the Turkish media. 

The number of people killed has reached 7,108, while the number of injured in the disaster hit 40,910, according to AFAD data as of 10:35 a.m. local time.

The AFAD also stated that 79,110 aid personnel are currently working in the region as part of relief efforts.

Early Monday morning, a 7.7 magnitude tremor struck the Kahramanmaras province. Then about nine hours later, a 7.6 magnitude quake also centered in Kahramanmaras rocked the region, affecting several other provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, and Sanliurfa.

The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Lebanon and Syria.

A total of 59,971 emergency officials are working in the area, including 3,200 personnel from 65 countries, AFAD said in a statement.

In a press briefing, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said at least 18,000 gendarmes and nearly 10,000 police officers have been dispatched to the scene.

An additional 10,000 gendarmes will soon be dispatched to the scene, he said.

At least 941 buildings in Kahramanmaras have completely collapsed, he added.
