Azerbaijan, Iran discuss current state of bilateral relations

As part of his visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran, representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on special assignments Khalaf Khalafov has met with Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The meetings discussed the current state of Azerbaijani-Iranian relations, and taking bilateral relations forward through negotiations, joint steps for stepping into new stage and holding relevant events.

They also looked into reopening of Azerbaijan`s Embassy in Tehran in the context of severe penalty for the terrorist who attacked the embassy.

The parties exchanged also views on important transportation, economic, as well as energy projects that serve the prospects for development of bilateral relations. Both sides supported implementation of projects for the creation of new communication links through the North-South Transport Corridor connecting the two countries, the East Zangezur economic region of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through the territory of Iran, energy projects, especially measures that ensure the commissioning of the "Khudafarin" and "Giz Galasi" reservoirs, as well as other energy projects on the Araz River.

Khalaf Khalafov provided detailed information about the local anti-terrorist measures to put an end to the political and military provocations of Armenia and separatist forces in the Karabakh region and restore peace and tranquility in the region.

He noted that signing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the normalization of relations would play an important role for security and stability in the region, and it is important to unite the efforts of the countries of the region in this way.

The sides emphasized that multifaceted Azerbaijani-Iranian relations, including military and military-technical cooperation serve peace, trust and development in the region.

The Iranian side expressed their will to expand and develop relations with Azerbaijan in all fields.
