Azerbaijan will continue efforts to strengthen NAM’s international authority: Foreign Ministry

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has issued a statement highlighting Azerbaijan’s role in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the system of international relations.

The statement reads: "October 25 marks four years since the beginning of Azerbaijan's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement. During its presidency, Azerbaijan pursued a policy aimed at restoring the former authority of the movement in the system of international relations and promoting the Bandung principles without contradicting any international actors.

Although most of the period of the presidency fell on the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the globally important initiatives of President Ilham Aliyev, the challenges that have arisen have become new opportunities for cooperation,” the statement said, citing as an example the nomination by Azerbaijan in the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council of important resolutions aimed at putting an end to the “policy of vaccine nationalism”, unfair and indifferent attitude towards developing countries.

During the four years of its chairmanship, Azerbaijan has also taken important steps to institutionalize the Non-Aligned Movement by creating a parliamentary network and a NAM youth organization. Currently, measures are being taken to create women's and media platforms for NAM. During the chairmanship of Azerbaijan, the first meeting of the think tanks of the NAM member states was held, the first step was taken to unite them. During the presidency, Azerbaijan prevented provocative steps within the framework of the UN against our territorial integrity and sovereignty during the Patriotic War.

In the 19th NAM Summit to be held from January 15 to 20, 2024 in Kampala (Uganda), the chairmanship will pass from Azerbaijan to Uganda, but Azerbaijan will be in the Top Three of the NAM Presidents for the next three years.

Azerbaijan will continue its efforts to strengthen the international authority and positions of the movement."
