Armenian PM comments on Russian military base’s exit from Gyumri

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, said that Armenia “does not see any advantages in the continued presence of the Russian military on its territory”, AzVision.az reports.

He openly stated that Russia “failed to fulfill its obligations” during Azerbaijan’s local anti-terror measures in Karabakh, and hinted at Armenia’s intentions to seek new partners.

These statements effectively mark the initiation of a process to remove the Russian military base from Armenian territory. However, it’s worth noting that forming new partnerships would be incompatible with Armenia’s membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the presence of Russian military personnel within Armenia.

Consequently, Pashinyan might soon propose the withdrawal of the Russian military base and engage in discussions about Armenia’s potential exit from the CSTO.

In response to these developments, Moscow is expected to react decisively to Pashinyan’s statements.
