Armenia urges Russia to withdraw its border guards from Yerevan’s airport, says Kremlin

Press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has said that Russia received a letter from the Armenian authorities.

Peskov noted that Armenia called for the withdrawal of Russian border guards from Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport, AzVision.az reports citing Russian media.

“The corresponding departments of the two countries are holding talks,” he said.

“I can’t disclose more details. Of course, the talks at all possible levels will be continued,” Peskov added.

President of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan said on February 27 that Russian border guards should leave Yerevan’s airport, adding that Armenia itself will protect its borders. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow considers this action as Armenia’s unfriendly behaviour.

Later, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the Armenian border service notified Russia of its intention to guard the airport in Yerevan without Russia’s assistance.
