Strong quake strikes Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9.03 am today near the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, AzVision.az reports citing to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

It said in a statement that the epicentre of the earthquake was 80 kilometres east of Wiwak, Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 44 kilometres.

The quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added.
