Japan’s new leader to hold snap general election on Oct. 27

Shigeru Ishiba, Japan's newly elected ruling party leader and soon-to-be prime minister, has decided to hold a general election on Oct. 27, according to a report by Tokyo-based Kyodo News on Sunday.

Ishiba, who was chosen as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party on Friday, plans to dissolve the lower house — the House of Representatives — for a snap election to seek a fresh public mandate.

A former Japanese defense minister, Ishiba on Friday won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) leadership race to become the country’s 102nd prime minister.
