According to Markku Hassinen, the head of the Finnish Border Guard, the majority of the planned work will be completed by 2025, well ahead of the original schedule.
The decision to fortify the Finnish-Russian border comes amidst heightened concerns over potential hybrid threats. It was planned to build around 200 kilometers of fence in the period between 2024 to 2026. The border fence project is estimated to cost around 74 million euros, as proposed by the Finnish Ministry of the Interior in March 2024.
