Saudi Arabia-based Al Jazeera newspaper has published a press release of the Azerbaijani Embassy on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the Black January events.
The press release says the tragic events of January 19-20, 1990 mark a turning point in the story of Azerbaijan’s independence from the Soviet Union. It notes that on 20 January the Soviet troops and Armenian gangster groups invaded the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, in a desperate, brutal and yet futile attempt to strangle the growing independence movement.
The press release gives a history of the events that led to the January massacre.
It also highlights the causes and consequences of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, AzerTAc reports.
