Metsamor NPP closure would be right step
Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) poses a serious threat to Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, Cengiz Aktar, expert for Turkey-EU relations and director of the European Union Studies Center at the Sabanci University in Istanbul, told.
He said that neither Russia nor Armenia is able to finance the reconstruction of the Metsamor NPP that was built in the Soviet Union.

“Due to the fact that the technology used in the station is completely outdated, its current state is nothing more than a threat to Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan,” the expert said.

Aktar noted that the absence of normal relations between Turkey and Armenia turns the NPP into an extra means of threat to Turkey.

“If we are talking about the repair and re-commissioning of the Metsamor station, then the Norwegian and US made equipment can use. Since this equipment is too expensive, neither Armenia nor Russia can buy them,” he added.

The expert stressed that given the current reality, the closure of the Metsamor station would be a right step.
