Armenians demand withdrawing of Russian military base from country
Protest action is being held in front of the Russian embassy in Armenia over the murder of an Armenian family in Gyumri city, Armenia Today reported.
Six members of the Avetisyan family were shot and killed in Gyumri on Jan.12. A small baby got wounded.

Valery Permyakov, the serviceman of Russian military base in Armenia, is the one suspected of committing the crime. When he tried to escape, he was detained by the Russian border guards, while attempting to cross Armenian-Turkish border.

Currently, Permyakov is on the territory of Russian base and hasn’t been handed over to Armenian law enforcement agencies.

The protestors demand to withdraw Russian military base from Armenian territory and recall Russian ambassador to this country.

“We, Armenian citizens demand official explanations from Russian Federation how a man suspected of committing such inhuman crime was serving in Russian military base stationed in Armenia,” said a message spread by the organizers of the protest action.

“We demand from the Russian president, the supreme commander of Russian armed forces to officially apologize to Armenian people and withdraw Russian base from Armenia’s territory,” said the message.

The 102nd Russian military base has been stationed in Gyumri, in the north of Armenia since 1995. This military base carries out combat alert mission within the Joint CIS Air Defense System.

The base is subordinate to the Group of Russian Forces of the Transcaucasian Military District of Russia.
