Japan Doubles estimate for clean-up of Fukushima tragedy consequences to $188Bln
Japanese government estimates the cost of eliminating all consequences of Fukushima nuclear disaster to reach about $188 billion, which is twice more than the previous assessment, local media reported Friday.
The country`s industry ministry announced the new figures and its plan to ask Tokyo Electric Power Company, Fukushima plant`s operator, to carry out corporate restructuring beyond what it had already done, according to NHK broadcaster.

The previous estimate was $98 million dollars, but newly discovered difficulties in removing reactors and the future raise of farming-related compensation led to an increase in the projected total.

In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami that hit Japan`s Fukushima NPP, leading to the leakage of radioactive materials and the shutdown of the plant. Soon after the tremor, Tokyo introduced new safety guidelines for the NPP and the first reactor of the Sendai NPP was the first to return online under the new regulations.
