Avalanche hitsarmy camp in Sonamarg; 5 soldiers feared dead
Five soldiers have reportedly died after an avalanche hit an Army camp in Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir. More details are awaited on the number of casualties in the incident.
Reports say those dead also include an Army Major. Sources say that while the body of one jawan has been recovered, Army sources say that the casualties may rise.

Earlier, at least four people were buried alive in a snow avalanche in Gurez sector, Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. This after Jammu and Kashmir braced another spell of heavy rain and snowfall that continue to intensify with each passing day. The regional Met office said that the new spell of widespread rain and snowfall may last till January 26.

The night temperature across Kashmir have recorded a considerable dip since Monday. The divisional administration has also issued directions for taking precautionary measures.

“Snowfall could be heavy in the higher reaches while rain and moderate snowfall would occur in the plains,” said a Met official. As per an IANS report, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 4.1 in Srinagar, minus 7.1 in Pahalgam and minus 8.6 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg. The Leh town of Ladakh region was the coldest recorded place in the state as the mercury settled at a low of minus 8.7 degrees Celsius, the official said.

Snowfall has disrupted normal life in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports say that the closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway promoted unscrupulous traders to increase prices of essentials.
