The statement was sent to the U.S. Congress, the press service of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora told APA.

The statement by the Helsinki Commission threatens security in the region, the diaspora organization said in its statement.

“There are no political prisoners in Azerbaijan, more than 70 percent of Azerbaijani citizens are internet Users, and access to the Internet is free in the country,” said the statement.

The statement stressed that the Azerbaijani state which is an island of stability and security in a complicated geopolitical region pursues an independent policy based on the will of its people.

“Today, Azerbaijan is rapidly developing in all directions under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, freedom of the press are fully ensured in Azerbaijan. Under these conditions, steps being taken against the Azerbaijani president are regrettable,” said the document.

Azerbaijan and the U.S. enjoy strategic partnership based on common values and interests, according to the statement.

“The letter sent by U.S. President Donald Trump to Ilham Aliyev on the occasion of his victory in the presidential election is an indicator that Azerbaijan is a valuable partner for the United States. Azerbaijan and the U.S. cooperate on the issue of global security and jointly carry out a struggle against terrorism. We support President Ilham Aliyev and wish him success in his activity for ensuring prosperity of the Azerbaijani people,” the statement said.
