Why you should NEVER use a towel to dry your face

Most women complete part of their skincare routine in the shower before patting their face dry and proceeding to apply serums, moisturisers and (hopefully) sunscreen too.

But it's that split second decision to connect your towel with your skin that could actually be costing you long term.

According to Beauticate it's a natural instinct to want to stop your skin from dripping wet - but you should resist the urge.

'Did you know that keeping your skin damp could increase the efficacy of any products you use following your cleanse,' they wrote.

'Damp skin acts like a sponge, and is quicker at absorbing ingredients that come into contact. Even worse, consider all the potential acne-causing bacteria your towel could be harbouring.'

Interestingly Australian beauty expert Jocelyn Petroni said the skin only remains damp for a short amount of time after the shower - so it's important to act quickly.

But don't race in there with your Clinique when it's sopping wet - there are no benefits found in layering skincare over saturated, wet skin

'Skin care ingredients will soak into the skin and do their job regardless if your skin is damp or not upon application. However, the benefit of applying products to damp skin means you can apply products more quickly and you can also see better skin results,' Jocelyn said.

She recommends applying a serum each morning, followed by an oil after the serum has absorbed and then a moisturiser.

For men the message is still the same. Even if they're only applying a light moisturiser, they should do so just after their morning shower.
