Zas: CSTO will not intervene in Armenia-Azerbaijan border issue

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will not intervene in the tension on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas, AzVision.az reports.

He noted that the tense situation in southern Armenia does not comply with the provisions of the CSTO collective defense charter and is considered a border incident.

"It must be understood that the CSTO potential is used only in case of aggression, attack. Here, we are dealing, in fact, with a border incident. Thank God, there are no casualties, no shootings. This is a border incident, it must be resolved, and we are in favor of resolving it peacefully," Zas stated.

The CSTO chief said that there is no escalation of the conflict in the region.

"Now we do not have to talk about the situation getting worse in some way. It is not getting worse, and that is already good, is already a result. There is a lot of work to be done ahead to resolve this contentious issue at the very border, but it must be resolved at the negotiating table," Zas stressed.

Also, he said that after Armenia applied to the CSTO in May, the organization held consultations on the situation in the country's border regions.

After the Second Karabakh War, Armenia was forced to sign an act of capitulation, undertaking to withdraw from Azerbaijani territories. The Armenian army that retreated to the pre-occupation borders, tried to create problems in the demarcation process in the following months. On May 12-13, the Azerbaijani army faced provocations from Yerevan while being stationed in Garagol on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and carrying out border construction work in a number of other areas.
