Azerbaijan’s FM meets outgoing Lithuanian ambassador

Azerbaijan`s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has received Ambassador of Lithuania to the country Egidijus Navikas as he has completed his diplomatic tenure in Azerbaijan.

The meeting discussed issues on the agenda of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Lithuania, as well as the current situation in the region.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov thanked the Lithuanian ambassador for his efforts to develop relations between the two countries during his tenure in Azerbaijan and wished the ambassador success in his future activities.

FM Bayramov noted that the recent expansion of mutual contacts and high-level visits between Azerbaijan and Lithuania contribute to the development of bilateral relations. Bayramov underlined the importance of the 7th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on bilateral cooperation between the Governments of Azerbaijan and Lithuania held during his official visit to the Republic of Lithuania this May in terms of discussing development of cooperation in a number of areas, including the economy, energy security, investment, communications and etc.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the ambassador about the situation in the region in the post-conflict period, as well as the process of normalization of Azerbaijan-Armenia relations. According to him, Armenia's continuing military and political provocations and landmine threats against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, contrary to the norms of international law, its obligations and its statements, is the biggest threat for advancing the peace agenda.

Azerbaijani FM brought to the attention that the sending of convoys by Armenia to Azerbaijani territories under the name of "humanitarian cargo" without agreement with Azerbaijan, which caused a provocation against the Lachin border checkpoint this June 15, and resulted the wounding of Azerbaijan`s border guard, is another provocation calculated to mislead the international community. Bayramov stressed that the fact that proposal to use the "Aghdam-Khankendi" road for the supply of more products to the Armenian residents had been declined was not a humanitarian issue, but a political one.

Ambassador Egidijus Navikas thanked Minister Jeyhun Bayramov for the warm reception. He noted that although the period of his activity in Azerbaijan coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, nevertheless, the positive dynamics in the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Lithuania was observed during the period of his activity in Azerbaijan. He also highlighted the importance of existing political relations between the two countries in promoting the development of relations in the fields of economy, energy, transport and communications.

The two also exchanged vıews on other issues of mutual interest.
