  Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Parliament meets with former British PM

Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, met with Baroness Theresa May, the 76th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Member of the House of Lords.

During the meeting, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova highlighted the importance of COP29.

Baroness Theresa May congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting such a pivotal global event, adding that COP29, which brought together more than 70,000 delegates, is in the world’s spotlight.

Theresa May emphasized once again the high-level COP29 arrangements in Azerbaijan.

Sahiba Gafarova stated that even before its COP29 Presidency, Azerbaijan, as a country affected by impacts of climate change, has always paid great attention to the environmental protection along with utilization of renewable energy sources. She also briefed Baroness Theresa May on the green energy projects implemented in the liberated territories. During the conversation, the sides stressed the pivotal role of parliaments in combating climate change.

Sahiba Gafarova highlighted Azerbaijan's cooperation with the Commonwealth of Nations, the humanitarian and technical assistance it provides to small island developing states via this organization, as well as the organization of the Summit of small island developing states within COP29.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
