PKK stands behind Izmir terrorist attack: governor
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) stands behind the terrorist attack in the Turkish city of Izmir, according to preliminary information, said the city’s governor Erol Ayyildiz, Turkish NTV channel reported Jan. 5.
Terrorists attacked the police officers who wanted to check a suspicious car at the police roadblock, he said.

“The terrorists opened fire. During the skirmish, they blew up the car,” Ayyildiz added.

The explosion and skirmish killed a police officer and a court officer, while another 10 people were injured.

Two of the attackers were neutralized during a shoot-out with security forces. An operation to neutralize the third terrorist continues.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for more than 30 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist organization.
