Amid the major migrant crisis currently unraveling in Europe, Hungary, a Schengen border country, has been used by hundreds of thousands of migrants as a gateway to wealthier EU member states with higher social benefits.
The closure of the Serbian-Hungarian border and the penalties Budapest introduced on September 15 for border infringements have forced thousands of migrants from Serbia to reroute through Croatia and Slovenia, in their journey further into the European Union.
Hungary is currently constructing a fence on the border with Croatia to prevent refugees from illegally crossing the border and allowing them to enter only through designated checkpoints with appropriate documentation. A similar wall on the border with Serbia has proven its efficacy.
