History of animated films in Azerbaijan
Animation films have a major impact on children`s behavior and play an important role in their intellectual and emotional development. The creation of animated films in Azerbaijan began in the early 30s of the twentieth century. In 1933, the staff of "Azerbaijanfilm" studio carried out preparations for making this kind of cinema in advance, and brought material from Moscow.
When they shot the documentaries "Lokbatan" and "The Oil Symphony" they used technical animation. On February 28, 1969, the shootings of the animated film "Dwarf-Jirtdan" based on the folk tale of the same name were completed. "Dwarf" was the first film shot after the restoration of the animation workshop of the studio.

The film was screened in 1969. Thus, the shooting of "Dwarf" ushered in the 2nd phase in the history of animated films in Azerbaijan.

"Beautiful Fatma", "Dwarf-Jirtdan", "Fox is going to the pilgrimage", “Tik Tik Khanim”, "Mirror", and “Javanshir” have been considered the most favorite animated films of Azerbaijani children for many years.

The most recent success in the production of animated film was Azerbaijan`s first national animation film in 3D format, "Jirtdan and Tapagoz", which was released in 2012 with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

RASHAD EFENDIYEV, ANIMATION AGENCY FOUNDER: In the beginning, we were engaged in making commercials, and we used character animation in our works. Once, luckily, we were in the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. They entrusted this job to us. Initially, we planned to shoot a 6-minute cartoon, but the Ministry was very satisfied with our job and decided to extend the length of the animation up to 10 minutes. Two years have passed since then and recently the Ministry of Tourism and Culture entrusted us the shooting of a second part of this film. With great pleasure, we tackled the second part.

According to the creators of the film, animation is very important and it is very effective for communicating with children. It can convey a message far more quickly than a written text, for example. For one thing, you do not need to be able to read to understand an animated film. In their opinion, it is one of the best ways to teach children, attracting them with colorful and interesting episodes. In “Jirtdan and a magic robe” artists aimed to teach children such values as friendship and mutual assistance.

YUSIF GABILOV, ANIMATION AGENCY FOUNDER: Jyrtdan is a real Azerbaijani. He is a very friendly person, very intelligent, his brain works properly, and he is always ready to defend and help people.

RASHAD EFENDIYEV, ANIMATION AGENCY FOUNDER: He is a bright boy who can always come up with something interesting. However, it does not mean that he can trample on someone or deceive and outwit his friends.

Animators compare their own work to sculpting. When a person creates a sculpture the tools are his or her hands, but in creating animations the tool is a program, they say.

RASHAD EFENDIYEV, ANIMATION AGENCY FOUNDER: Before shooting animations, we try to play those roles ourselves. It is much easier to create characters looking at people, their moves.

3Dost Animation Agency hopes to be internationally recognized in the future, to represent Azerbaijan`s animation industry in the world. However, the main task is to bring happiness to our children with presenting new heroes in the nearest future by professional personnel and interesting films.
