North-South corridor needed for greater trade with Russia
Iran expects implementation of the North-South transport corridor to strengthen trade cooperation with Russia, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in an interview with Russian news agency TASS.
"The North-South corridor will enable probably one of the best and cheapest routes from Asia to Europe," Zarif said. "This will enable countries in Europe and Russia to be able to connect through the Persian Gulf and through the Sea of Oman in a way that could make economic sense."

"It requires all of us - Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan - to cooperate on building the infrastructure, on easing our customs and tariff values, so that we can encourage greater trade," he said.

"We are ready for that and I believe the meeting of the three countries` foreign ministers was a good first step," he said. "It would be followed by a summit and probably by meetings in the sectorial field."

The North-South international transportation corridor is meant to connect the northern Europe with the south-eastern Asia. It will serve as a link between the railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.

At an initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 million tons of cargo via the North-South corridor a year, and 15 to 20 million tons of cargo in the future.
