Nicola Sturgeon vows to hold second Scottish independence referendum as early as next year
Nicola Sturgeon has made a key speech on the future of the union in which she vowed to hold a second Scottish independent referendum.
The First Minister said her preferred date for the vote would be between Autumn 2018 and Spring 2019 when the terms of the UK's exit from the union has become clear.

She claimed there could still be room for compromise with Theresa May if the Prime Minister were to offer a deal for Scotland but warned this has not been forthcoming so far.

Her speech came ahead of a debate in the Commons where MPs will consider the Article 50 bill later this afternoon.

The Government is thought to have headed off a revolt from Tory MPs over EU citizen's rights and a so-called meaningful vote on the final deal.

The bill will then pass back to the House of Lords, where is it also expected to pass without impediment.
