Turkmen president talks stepping up Caspian ports
Turkmenistan is showing interest in boosting the potential of the Caspian states
During recent high-level talks in Tehran, Iran, on Nov. 22-23, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed to hold the first international meeting to mull this matter.

The national television channel Altyn Asyr quoted the president as saying that currently a major project is underway to construct the Turkmenbashi International Sea Port, which will help develop mutual transport links with the Iranian ports of Anzali and Neka on the Caspian Sea.

He added that this will also make it possible on the south to multiply cargo transportations through the Bandar Abbas Port to the Persian Gulf.

Berdimuhamedov also proposed to create Turkmenistan-Iran Interstate Coordination Commission for Trade Issues to modernize interconnection among the ports.

Currently, Turkmenistan’s modernized large-capacity vessels are actively involved in freight transportations in the Caspian Sea, operating on international routes from the port of Turkmenbashi to the ports of other Caspian states.

Turkmenistan borders with Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Iran on the Caspian Sea.
