EU calls on Egpyt`s army to end violence, move to elections
Egypt`s military-backed government must bring about an end to the bloodshed and move towards elections, the European Union has said.
"While all should exert maximum restraint, we underline the particular responsibility of the interim authorities and of the army in bringing clashes to a halt," EU President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said.

They said the path of confrontation that was pursued despite international efforts at reconciliation was one that "will not succeed."

They called for a return to a political process, new elections and the establishment of a civilian government, as promised by the interim government. "The Egyptian Army must respect and support such a political process."
